Rembrandt, Volume I: Text
Jakob Rosenberg
Rembrandt’s reputation as one of the greatest artists of all time has been fully recognized for more than a century. Yet here, we believe, is the first comprehensive study of Rembrandt’s many-sided art that is both readable and scholarly, that reveals both to the general reader and the specialist the full stature of the man and his work.
Jakob Rosenberg, a lifelong Rembrandt scholar, was formerly Curator of the Print Room of the Berlin State Museum, and Curator of the Print Department at the Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University. He is a writer of rare perception and clarity.
Designed to give proper display to the reproductions and yet of a convenient size for comfortable reading and study, these two volumes represent book work at its finest. Volume I contains 264 text pages, set in Caslon Old Face type. Volume II contains 281 rich gravure reproductions of Rembrandt’s paintings, etchings, and drawings, arranged in unorthodox and stimulating order.
